International Ranking

  1. Professor Wen-Tsuen Chen, an IEEE Fellow, is a pioneer of computer network research in Taiwan. He is a worldwide famous expert and has received many awards including the Technical Achievement Award, IEEE Computer Society. Professor Cheng-Shang Chang, an IEEE Fellow, is an internationally renowned scholar in communication network theory. Professor Jang-Ping Sheu, an IEEE Fellow, is an internationally famous scholar in the fields of wireless networks and sensor networks. Professor Bor-Sen Chen, an IEEE Fellow, is outstanding in the fields of system control and systematic biology. He has written 7 highly cited papers. Professor Youn-Long Lin, a Distinguished Specially Granted Researcher of NSC, is an internationally well-known IC design expert. He was the Dean of Research and Development Office in NTHU. In addition to academic contribution, Professor Lin’s research results are also frequently applied in real-world applications. He founded the Global Unichip Corp. (a listed company in the Taiwan stock market). In academia, Professor Lin’s contribution to industry is next to none in Taiwan. Professor Jyuo-Min Shyu, an IEEE Fellow, is currently temporarily transferred to the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) as its President. Professor Cheng-Wen Wu, an IEEE Fellow, is currently temporarily transferred to the Information & Communications Research Laboratories of ITRI as its Managing Director. With close cooperation with ITRI, its research experiences and resources are expected to be invaluable additions to our research team to reach its goals.
  2. IEEE Transactions on Information Theory is the most important and authoritative journal in the information theory field. According to the ISI database, the academia and industries in Taiwan have published 106 papers in IEEE Transactions on Information Theory from 1976 to March, 2010. Among them, NTHU has published 21 papers (14 full papers and 7 short papers), NCTU has published 25 papers (10 full papers and 15 short papers), and NTU has published 13 papers (3 full papers and 10 short papers). If we consider 2 short papers and 1 full paper roughly have the same amount of contribution and do the according conversion, both NTHU and NCTU have published 17.5 papers, tied for 1st. (Taking the faculty size into account, in terms of the number of papers published per faculty member, NTHU is ranked 1st and the only 1st in Taiwan.) From 2006 to now, this research team has published 11 papers on the journal. IEEE Transactions on VLSI Systems and IEEE Transactions on Computer-Aided Design are the best journals in the chip design field. In the recent five years, we have published 144 papers on these journals, the highest number in Taiwan.
  3. IEEE INFOCOM is one of the most prestigious international conferences in computer networks, and it is often used as a measure for the performance of research teams in the networking area. In each recent year, Taiwan researchers published less than 10 INFOCOM papers in total. From 2007 to 2010, 19 papers are published totally, and 14 out of the 19 papers are published by our research team.
  4. This research team has received many important research awards in the past years. These awards include, but not limited to: “IEEE Technical Achievement Award” by Wen-Tsuen Chen. “IEEE Fellow” by Wen-Tsuen Chen, Cheng-Shang Chang, Jang-Ping Sheu, Bor-Sen Chen, Jyuo-Min Shyu, and Cheng-Wen Wu. “National Chair, MOE” by Wen-Tsuen Chen. “Academic Award, MOE” by Wen-Tsuen Chen, Cheng-Wen Wu, and Bor-Sen Chen. “Distinguished Specially Granted Researcher Award, NSC” by Wen-Tsuen Chen, Bor-Sen Chen, Jang-Ping Sheu, and Youn-Long Lin. “Specially Granted Researcher Award, NSC” by Cheng-Shang Chang. “Dr. W.-Y. Pan Outstanding Research Award, Pan Wen Yuan Foundation” by Wen-Tsuen Chen and Cheng-Shang Chang. “Y. Z. Hsu Science and Technology Chair” by Cheng-Shang Chang, Jang-Ping Sheu and Bor-Sen Chen. “Outstanding Scholar Award, Foundation for the Advancement of Outstanding Scholarship” by Wen-Tsuen Chen and Bor-Sen Chen.
  5. This research team has plenty of international cooperation experiences. It has collaborated with many international top-ranking universities and transnational corporations, such as Microsoft Research, Google, IBM, Cornell University, Northwestern University, Ohio State University, Delft University, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, UCLA, University of Waterloo, Peking University, Tsinghua University (in Beijing), and Zhejiang University.
